Vestibular Rehabilitation

What is the Vestibular system? This is a common question because it is something that most people have never heard of! The vestibular system rests within the inner ear and it is comprised of small organs that play an essential role in balance and keeping us in an upright position. When the vestibular system is not functioning properly, it can contribute to the following symptoms:

  • Vertigo (visual sensations of spinning)

  • Dizziness

  • Imbalance

  • Falls

  • Vision dysfunction (light sensitivity, blurry vision with head movements)

  • Hearing loss

  • Nausea

  • Migraine

  • Headache

With the associated symptoms above, vestibular dysfunction can be very debilitating. The purpose of vestibular rehabilitation is to improve these symptoms.

A vestibular physiotherapist will use a multifactorial assessment approach to determine what is causing the vestibular dysfunction. They will perform a variety of tests that will assess balance, walking, the presence of vertigo, eye movements and head positions.

Following the assessment, the therapist will then create a personalized treatment plan designed to address the individual’s deficits for vestibular rehabilitation.
